Use every patient contact as an opportunity to hear the gentle whoosh of air during exhalation and inhalation. A critical step in identifying abnormal lung sounds is having listened to lots and lots of normal lung sounds. You may need to move the patient to the ambulance or an exam room before you are going to be able to hear well with your stethoscope. Some scenes, especially outdoors, as just too loud with ambient noise. Ask your partner to pause with an assessment or intervention or the patient to stop moving while you are listening. Use verbal direction and body language, like a focused glance or head nod, to quiet your partner, the patient and bystanders as you attempt to listen. Double-check the direction the ear tips are facing if you are having a hard time hearing. The ear tubes and ear tips are generally angled and should be inserted pointed or angled towards the user’s nose. The most common mistake I have seen EMT students make is inserting the stethoscope ear tips in the wrong direction. If you hold the diaphragm too loosely, you’ll hear the sound of the diaphragm moving on the patient’s skin and hair. Apply just enough pressure that the diaphragm doesn’t slide and stays in place as the patient’s chest wall expands and contracts with breathing. The diaphragm of the stethoscope, placed on the patient’s bare skin, needs to be held firmly in place, but not pressed deeply into the patient’s tissue. Start high and listen to lung sounds as you work your way down the patient’s back. If you are too low or below the posterior rib cage, you are more likely to hear bowel sounds than the whoosh of air moving in and out of the lungs. The lungs are underneath and protected by the ribs. You’ll hear best if you place the stethoscope diaphragm directly against the patient’s bare skin. Clothing, even light layers, can dampen the sounds you are attempting to hear. But don’t spend so much on a stethoscope that you’ll be financially and emotionally crushed if you leave it behind on scene or forget to take it out of the ambulance at shift change. The beginner stethoscope you bought at the start of EMT class might be great for the relative calm and quiet of the classroom, but you’ll probably be better served by a higher-quality stethoscope in the ambulance, on the street or in a patient’s bedroom. When buying a stethoscope, like anything, you’ll get what you pay for. In general, use hearing protection anytime you are operating light- or heavy machinery, including your lawnmower, leaf blower and chainsaw. While riding in the ambulance or fire apparatus, keep the windows up when running with the siren (and lights) and use employer-provided hearing protection. When you are not using your stethoscope, take good care of your hearing by keeping the volume down on music, videos and games, especially while using AirPods or headphones. I have also added additional tips from other EMS educators, so read all the way to the end of the article and submit your own tips to be added to the list. If you are having a hard time hearing through your stethoscope, here are a few things to try. Bystanders and partners talking, dogs barking, idling vehicle engines and more can make it difficult to hear the transmission of audio waves from the patient’s lungs, heart, bowels or arteries through the stethoscope tubing and into your ears. But hearing through a stethoscope in the chaotic prehospital environment is a constant challenge. In some situations, paramedics might auscultate a patient’s heart sounds or a long bone to assess for a fracture. At a minimum, EMTs and paramedics are expected to auscultate a patient’s blood pressure and listen to lung sounds as part of a respiratory illness physical exam. Auscultation, which is to listen, with a stethoscope is part of every patient assessment.

QucsStudio is mainly a circuit simulator that has evolved out of the project Qucs, but isn’t compatible with it. QucsStudio is free but does not seem to be open source. QucsStudio a free, non-commercial, powerful circuit simulator. The Windows version is stand-alone (no installer). Qucs offers Windows, macOS, and Linux binaries. After the simulation has finished you can add and view the simulation results along with the circuit schematic or on a presentation page. It enables you to setup a circuit with a graphical user interface (GUI) and simulate the large-signal, small-signal and noise behavior of the circuit. Qucs (Quite Universal Circuit Simulator) is the original application. To my knowledge there are three main facets, each with their own strengths, Qucs, QucsStudio, and Qucs-S, with not a lot of interoperability between them: The Qucs-based eco-sphere is rather fragmented and somewhat confusing in my opinion. Posted in Software Hacks Tagged simulation, SPICE Post said: “Qucs and QucsStudio (not mentioned) are actually different programs…”Īctually there is a bit more to the story. But there were a few on the list we had not heard of and maybe you’ll find something new there, too. For example, Falstad has a great mixed mode that can even include an AVR microprocessor. While the capsule descriptions are nice, you may want to dig in a little on the ones you are most interested in. While the list includes TI’s Tina, it doesn’t seem to mention that TI also provides a free version of PSpice which is a very popular professional product. Proteus doesn’t let you save or print unless you pay. For example, DCAClab only provides an NPN bipolar transistor model. Many of the trial versions were very limited. Old favorites like Falstad (which is apparently known as Circuit Sims) and TinkerCAD made the list. Some are branded versions of commercial products (like Tina) or were made free after selling for higher price tags (like MicroCap 12). Some of those are just trial or student versions of paid products. There are also some lesser-known products. There are several on the list that you’ve probably heard of before like GNUCap and LTspice. If you are selecting one or don’t like the one you are currently using, it is well worth the time to review. But there’s a problem: how do you select from so many alternatives? We were interested in ’s review earlier this year of 30 free circuit simulators. While it’s true you tend to see less chronological resumes out there, the fact is your resume format choice should depend more on your experience and situation more than anything.ĬHRONOLOGICAL RESUMES are great for people who have had a steady career path in the same field for a long period of time or are applying for jobs in similar fields and has few, if any, gaps in their employment history.Įmployers like chronological resumes because it’s easy to see, at a glance, what an employee has done in the past. The first thing you have to do when settling on what type of resume you plan to write ( chronological, functional or combination), is figure out which resume format or resume layout matches your needs and who you are. The combination resume takes all the best parts of a functional resume (relevant skills, qualifications and specifically targeted information) and combines it with the chronological resume (everything you’ve done in the past that’s gotten you to where you are right now.)īut which of the three resume formats is right for me? How To Choose the Best Resume Format For You Whereas a chronological resume can seem cold and impersonal, almost a ‘shopping list’ of skills, promotions and upward mobility, a functional resume allows you to interject a little of “who” you are into the conversation, not just “what you do.”Īnd then someone said “I can’t decide…what works better for me? Chronological or functional? Ugh, why do I have to decide? Why can’t I use both?!”Īnd thus the combination resume was born. Rather than listing a ton of stuff that might not relate to what you’ve done, it highlights what is most relevant for the position you’re going after. Rather than just simply listing what you’ve done (chronological), a functional resume specifically targets the job you’re going after and makes sure that it highlight the skills and abilities you have that relate to that position. These jobs aren’t all exactly the same.so why are the resumes being used exactly the same? Shouldn’t they be specific to the job you’re seeking? Shouldn’t it be more…functional?”Īnd in that moment, the functional resume was born. It wasn’t just industry standard, it was global standard.īrain surgeons and tax accountants used the same chronological format as plumbers and babysitters – and for the time, it was fine. We agree that these are some of the benefits of this style of resume, which is why, during the heyday of the chronological resume, everyone used it. The reverse-chronological resume (simply called the “chronological”) was just that, a chronological listing of everything you’d done up to that point, starting with your most recent and working backwards.Īccording to the resume experts over at, a chronological resume “…shows recruiters that your most recent work experience is relevant to their needs, presents yourself in terms of promotions and upward career mobility and demonstrates that you’ve had a normal career without work gaps or terminations.” Once upon a time, many moons ago, there was just one way to write a resume, reverse-chronologically. It stands out!Īnd if you follow our guide, that breath of fresh air resume is going to be yours!īut first, we need to figure out what type of resume format you need. Yes, and the reason is, when a recruiter or hiring manager has to slog through a mountain of bad resumes, seeing a good resume is like a breath of fresh air. It’s good that there are bad resumes out there? That doesn’t make any sense! Trust me, it’s much easier to write a bad resume than a good one…and there are a LOT of bad ones out there, which, believe it or not, is a good thing. No, not deceptive as in you use it to lie to an employer about what you can do (don’t EVER do that!), but deceptive in that it seems like it should be really easy to write. The tricky part of writing your own resume is it’s a deceptive document. Well, it is, but only if you know what you’re doing. Keep up the astounding work Ben! You have a loyal customer in me indeed! P.S. Straight to the point, no way to hide any deficiencies, but to my ears there is none as the gorgeousness of the samples and the scripting is on display here. I tend to like the lack pretentiousness that comes with Ben's offerings - especially in his video walkthroughs. You won't find 100s of presets and snapshots - this baby is lean and mean music making machine. At a fraction of the cost of the aforementioned developers libraries Sospiro strings straddles the line between classical and avant-garde rather nicely. Ben you have out done yourself once again! Spitfire Audio and Orchestral Tools take notice of this talent. I pulled the trigger and purchased it - the moment I loaded it up in kontakt and played the first few chords I was blown away. I started to see a handful of reviews pop on youtube for this library and my interested was piqued. The Sync feature is one of the most essential features: with Sync enabled, any notes you add or change in a chord will sync with the first note that was played. The vibrato samples sound better or worse depending on how much they are being timed-stretched, which is why it is especially nice to have non-vibrato as an option. The non-vibrato has a lot of clarity, and especially brings attention to change in tone as each instrument gets louder and softer. The vibrato adds warmth and individuality to the sound, but may be a bit over dramatic in some cases. This means that the longer you hold a note, the longer its release will be.Īll of the swells can be either vibrato or non-vibrato. The Smart Release feature makes it so that however far into the crescendo-ing part of the sample you have held the note, it will jump that far from the end of the swell. The Length Multiplier is useful if you have a project with a fast bpm and you want it to sound slow, or vice versa. Using the Length in Beats slider, you can choose the appropriate length, and the corresponding swell will be chosen and time-stretched if needed.
